My Brain Hurts

September 29th, 2007 | Category: Life

I’ve been trying lately to really engage my brain more and learn more. I’ve always had curiosity about the world, and I figured it was time to engage that curiosity. So, when I don’t know about something, I go read about it. Lots of Wikipedia reading. Thinking about finding my friend library card so I can read more of the books that they have about subjects.

But the fact is that sometimes, all that reading and learning makes my brain hurt. Its gotten lazy lately, and would rather write letters to dirty dishes than struggle to understand fundamentalism or the design of chips. It would rather that we listen to Avril Lagvine and dance around in our PJs.

An Open Letter to the Dirty Dishes

September 28th, 2007 | Category: working

Dear Dirty Dishes,

You’ve been in the company sink for the last week, at least. You’re not getting washed. I don’t know who placed you there, perhaps in a hurry to get to a meeting, with good intentions to come back and wash you. Sadly, those intentions were not followed-through on, and there you sit, in your old-food slime.

I can’t bring myself to wash you. The most I do is run fresh water on you as I wash my own dishes, which live in my office. I wish that someone who placed you there would remember you, and come back and wash you. Preferably before you start growing mold or bugs. I admit, you gross me out a little. Something about the dirty dishes being there for days…weeks… the forgotten food particles slowly processing and changing into unrecognizable forms. It makes my stomach turn.

This isn’t the first time you’ve appeared. Do you know small glass baking pan? It was in the sink for 2+ weeks before I finally broke down and threw it away. I don’t want to give you that fate.

So dear, dear, dirty dishes. I sincerely hope that when I come back on Monday you’ll be cleaned and put away. If not… well… I may just have to avoid the company sinks for a while.

Sincerely,
B.

A Friend Like That…

September 28th, 2007 | Category: relationships

Cheesy as it sounds, I was watching old Will and Grace reruns tonight on Lifetime TV, and saw a commercial for their new show “Side Order of Life.” The blonde lady is dating someone new, and she says “If something is too good to be true, it probably is.” Her best friend just looks at her and says “You deserve too good to be true.”

My question is this: where do you find a friend like that? I think we could all use one.

McPunkin Has Left the House

September 26th, 2007 | Category: Life

Over the weekend we found a young cat in our yard. Very cute - orange and white. After his owners didn’t claim him within the first 24 hours, I started calling him McLovin. Mostly because he was such a happy cat, he’d just purr any time he got close to a person. Then in an attempt to not get too attached to him, I called him Punkin. He was orange, afterall, and it is fall. McLovin and Punkin combined into one name … McPunkin.

Today I took him over to the Humane Society to have him scanned for a microchip. He didn’t have one, so we packed back into the car and headed for home. While we were on our way, my Mom called and said that there was a flyer on the mailbox of someone who had lost their orange and white cat in our neighborhood. I called them when I got home, and they came and got McPunkin. They called him “MoMo.” (I wasn’t impressed with that name, but ok.) He didn’t want to go with them, but we sent him on his way.

The owners said that he goes outside often, and has been gone for hours before but not days. Something tells me that he’ll be back.

Why I’m Giving Up Handshakes

September 18th, 2007 | Category: news

I’m seriously giving up shaking hands with new people after reading the latest story from Discovery Health about men and handwashing.

One-third of men didn’t bother to wash after using the bathroom, compared with 12 percent of women, said the researchers, who spied on people in public restrooms. They reported their latest findings Monday at a meeting of infectious disease scientists.

Ick. Ick ick ick.

Stupid Girl Stuff

September 18th, 2007 | Category: Funny or Dumb

Sometimes I do stupid girl stuff. This weekend I did (at least) 2 stupid girl things.

1 - I cleaned my house top to bottom because I thought someone was coming over. When said someone canceled, I cried. I’m not really sure why - I’m typically not much of a cryer, but I couldn’t help it. Although it is quite nice to have such a clean house now, it would have been nice to have shown it off.

2 - I got “artificial” nails. So far, I don’t totally hate them. I did totally hate them for the first 24 hours. But after work today I went back to the nail place and had them cut shorter, and thinned. Seriously, these things were as thick as marshmallows before! Now they’re a bit more manageable. The nail tech kept telling me that she thought I was going to break them. I work a desk job lady. I already cleaned my entire house, so I’m not using any harsh chemicals. I just want nails that I can function with enough that I can button my own gosh-darned pants.

I’m going to try to keep the house cleaner now. But I’m not sure if I’ll keep the nails.

My Next Pet

September 15th, 2007 | Category: Funny or Dumb

If, God forbid, something were to happen to one of my cute, lovable and friendly pets, and I were to get a new pet, I think I would name it Crisis. I think its a great name because then I could say that “I need to get home to take care of my Crisis,” and people would think that I always had some kind of emergency when really I just needed to feed the hamster.

Or “I’m spending some quality time with Crisis.” Always a good thought. “Down Crisis, down!”

(Note: No, I haven’t been drinking or reading “Deep Thoughts with Jack Handy.” I just thought of it all on my own and made myself laugh. Now, stop trying to figure out my blog and go back to your regularly scheduled life!)

How Much Do We Really Need?

September 10th, 2007 | Category: Life

After all my delays, and much ado about all of that, the airline neglected to get my luggage to the airport at the same time they got me there. After my mini-breakdown in the lobby, the very nice hotel desk staff gave me a toothbrush, some toothpaste, and a comb. And 5 q-tips. I could have used some contact solution, but they were out.

But it made me think - for all the things we think we “need”, how much of it do we really?

It turns out, we need a lot less than we think we do.

This I write using my old fashioned pen and paper, because I’m surrounded by 4 electronic devices which are slowly running down because the chargers are packed in my missing luggage.

Update: After phone calls from the airline at 2 am and 4 am, my luggage arrives at about 715 am. Turns out, I like life a lot better with more ’stuff’.

Delays

September 09th, 2007 | Category: Life

(Note: This blog was written on a small legal pad, mostly sitting in DFW Airport. This is just the transcription of those pages. :) )

1:30 PM. I arrived at the Amarillo Airport. I check in my luggage and make my way to find a diet Coke. If only I knew then what I know now. First, I try to go through security with my fresh, unopened diet Coke. They won’t let me through because its more than 3 oz of liquid. I find out that the 11 am flight hasn’t left yet, so I go find a chair from which to enjoy my drink before going through secuirty. The ticket agent reassures me that my flight is going to be on time (3:10 pm). Once I go through security I meet a nice couple waiting for the same flight - they’re from Pittsburgh. We sat by each other for a little while, then they moved to have access to power outlets.
